Maxi Beier at Wing-Back: A Misguided Experiment

Niko Kovač has made his favorites clear to see within his squad. It’s fairly typical. Lest we forget, this is the same coach who pinned one of the most intuitive and genius processors of space in modern football history, Thomas Müller, on the right wing instead of his iconic central supporting role.

Beier is no Müller (of course), but there is a common thread in which we appear to be watching another player fall victim of the ever-persistent need to create wide overloads and rely on transition football under Kovač.
